Eco-gestures on board

FOR  SUSTAINABLE NAUTISM

At Grand Large Yachting our mission as a company is to

enable everyone, experienced sailor or not, to realize their

dream of blue water sailing while respecting the oceans

and providing them with security, serenity and support at

every stage of the project.

Preserving the oceans, educating to protect

The TAra foundation is committed to preserving the oceans.

Grand Large Yachting and Tara are partners, particularly to promote eco-actions on board to limit the environmental impact of sailing.

Outremer shares their values and supports their initiatives of the fundation.

Eco-gestures onboard

GREY WATER

Use eco-labelled products. Use port infrastructures connected to wastewater treatment plants when possible.

BLACK WATER

Dispose of black water more than 3 nautical miles from the coast. Use eco-labelled cleaning products.

WASTE

Reduce water consumption on board especially for showering. Install a rainwater harvesting sailcover, bimini or canister to clean the sailing boat.

ANCHORAGE

Anchoring outside protected areas and dive to check if this is a sandy area. Choose organized anchorages on mooring buoys.

NOISE POLLUTION

Protect marine life from noise pollution by limiting the use of engine propulsion to cases of real need.

MAINTENANCE

Protect your equipment against UV and monkey’s fist. Think about recycling networks for ropes, sails, distress lights.

ACTIVITIES

Respect the protected areas where hunting is prohibited. Respect the distance of 300 meters from your boat to observe cetaceans.

WATER WASTE

Reduce water consumption on board especially for showering. Install a rainwater harvesting sailcover, bimini or canister to clean the sailing boat.

Discharge of grey water

Risks

• Limitation of oxygen exchange between air and water

• Danger to humans and marine biodiversity

• Erosion of the coastline

Solutions

• Use vegetable sourced or eco-labelled products (black soap, Marseille soap, sodium bocarbonate, etc.) while limiting their consumption

• Use port infrastructures connected to wastewater treatment plants

Discharge of black water

outremer. zero

Risks

• Health risks for swimmers

• Disruption of ecosystems due to eutrophication of the environment (depletion of oxygen)

• Danger to marine biodiversity

Solutions

• Dispose of black water more than 3 nautical miles from the coast

• Use vegetable or eco-labelled cleaning products

• Use the port’s sanitary facilities as a priority when the yacht is docked

Waste

Risks

• Ingestion by wildlife

• Trap for wildlife

Solutions

• 4R rules

• Practice bulk

• Sort waste before leaving

• Drink the water from the watermaker

Risks related to mooring

DJI_0675

Risks

  • Damaging seagrass, grassland underwater

Solutions

• Anchoring outside protected areas

• Dive before anchoring to make sure you are in a sandy area

• Favour organised anchorages on mooring buoys which preserve flora and fauna

• Clean your chain and anchor when changing anchorages to avoid displacing species to an unsuitable ecosystem

Sound pollution

Risks

• Consequences on marine fauna:

• growth retardation • flight of the marine animal and change in migration routes,

• stress and disorientation

Solutions

• Limit the use of motor propulsion to cases of real need

• Encourage the use of a rowing tender

Maintenance

WhatsApp Image 2021-11-08 at 13.36.09

Risks

• Throwing away without repairing

• The use of antifouling and toxic products, as they degrade, spread toxic substances and thus contaminate marine biodiversity

Solutions

• Choose equipment manufacturers that promote repair

• Protect your equipment against UV and toulines

• Think about recycling channels for ropes, sails, distress lights

• Favour low tech where it brings comfort and sustainability

Activities onboard

Risks

• Stressing or injuring wildlife

• Reduce fish stocks and disrupt breeding seasons

• Damage underwater habitats

Solutions

• Respect the species and sizes of fish

• Respect the protected areas where hunting is prohibited

• Respect the distance of 300 meters from your boat to observe cetaceans

• Turn off your depth sounder and sonar in the observation area

Oils (petrol, diesel, motor oil, grease)

Risks

  • Asphyxiate living organisms !

Solutions

• Less polluting engine

• Anti-overflow funnel for filling fuel tanks

• Beware of leaks (anti-spill funnel for filling outboard tanks)

• Absorbent cloths under the engines

• Choose a mobile pump
